After the long summer break, it’s time to get back to school!

Hope you’ve all had fun in the holidays? We’ve been busy installing lots of shade sails ready for the new term, so some nice colourful playgrounds to welcome children and staff back!

Fingers crossed we get a little more sunshine before the dark nights and cold weather start to creep back in…if not, there’s always our weatherproof shade sails, so all can enjoy being outside come rain or shine!

UV Index – Be Safe in the Sun

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Increasingly announced in weather forecasts, the UV Index provides us with an indication of the day’s risk to UV Rays.  The UV Index is based on the UV  intensity expected when the sun is at its highest point, between 11am – 3pm.

Make sure you know you and your family’s skin types and keep an eye on the UV Index.  That way you are prepared and can still enjoy yourself in the sun!  Follow our sun safety tips - sun protection cream, hats, sunglasses and of course shade!

  • Low risk – no protection is needed.
  • Medium risk – take care around midday and do not spend too long in the sun unprotected.
  • High risk – cover up and spend time in the shade between 11 and 3. Use least factor 15 sunscreen on exposed skin.
  • Very high risk – be sure to cover up and in the shade between 11 and 3. And use at least factor 15 sunscreen.

Ambleside Primary Vote for Shade Sails!

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Just as important as the General Election, Ambleside Primary School’s Shade Sail election!

Ambleside Primary School’s children voted for their favourite design and colours for the Shade Sails being installed into their  Nottingham playground.  The children all coloured in blank Shade Sail design  sheets to get involved and put their own stamp on their playground.  The final design voted by the children was by ‘DJ Rice and Famous’ and stage one of the installation is now happening.

‘It’s been a good experience and it’s fun to choose ourselves what goes up around the school’ – DJ Rice and Famous of Ambleside Primary School, Nottingham.

Ambleside Primary’s Shade Sail project

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Stage 1 of the Shade Sail installation  has commenced at Ambleside Primary School in Nottingham!
‘It’s a really exciting project for all involved as this is the first time (for us) that the children have been given the responsibility to be involved in every stage of the decision process…the children were so hard working and a pleasure to work with’ Safe Shade’s Operations Manager, Dagan Bradbury.

The children really got their teeth into the project and worked really well together. They looked thoroughly into the design, the importance of having shade in their playground and then presented their findings to the school’s board of Governors.

‘Working with an outside company has been an enjoyable experience and the children will love the sun shades’ comments Louisa a pupil involved in Ambleside Primary School’s Academy project.

National School Grounds Week

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Every year Learning Through Landscapes (LTL) arrange the
National School Grounds Week.  A week long event that focusses on different themes to encourage schools to make the most of their outdoor spaces for both learning and play.  This year the theme is ‘Exhibition Mission’.   The aim is to get as many UK schools as possible to turn their playgrounds into art galleries, showcasing their work and projects – we think it’s a great idea!  LTL are encouraging schools to open their ‘Grounds into Galleries’ to parents and the community.  To find out more about this event and the great work that LTL do please click here.

Think outside the classroom!

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

At Safe Shade we believe the design of an outdoor space is just as important as the inside.  Unfortunately playgrounds are often over looked when it comes to upgrading or even the design of a new school. Having the right equipment in place is key in order to transform the outdoor environment into a more practical, usable space.

Very soon (fingers crossed) the nicer weather will be here, let’s make the most of it!  Think of as many activities/lessons as you can that can be enjoyed outside the classroom.  It adds more to the experience, especially after we’ve all been couped up inside for so long!  And, who cares if it’s raining, with weatherproof Shade Sails for shelter!  Enjoy the outdoors!
